Language Education Beyond Native Speakerism
26/07/2025 20:00 UTC
Native speakerism influences language education by idealizing native-like proficiency and undervaluing non-native teachers and diverse learner backgrounds. It promotes the view that only native mastery counts, causing anxiety and low self-esteem in students who don't meet these standards, impacting their well-being. This mindset limits opportunities for non-native teachers and affects their confidence and career progression. Challenging native speakerism can improve language education, as highlighted by my PhD research, which suggests practical ways to move beyond these limitations.
