26/07/2025 06:00 UTC
AI is increasingly used by students as a personalized tool for English learning beyond the classroom, particularly as an Extramural English (EE) aid. This study explores how English majors use AI out-of-class tasks, and what motivates such practices. Using a qualitative design grounded in Self-Directed Learning, EE, and AIDUA frameworks, data from student reflections reveal patterns in AI use, emotional and social responses, and perceived benefits and limitations. Findings inform both educators and developers, enhancing AI’s role in supporting autonomous English learning.
Key takeaways:
- Discover how English majors use AI tools like ChatGPT and grammar checkers for self-directed writing practice beyond the classroom.
- Explore a framework combining Self-Directed Learning, Extramural English, and AI acceptance to understand learners’ behavior and emotional responses.
- Gain practical ideas for how educators can support meaningful AI use in language learning and how developers can improve tools for English learners.
